An informal look at the kitchens on Porch.com show an overwhelming preference for gas stoves and ovens. It begs the question: why? Is it a preference for style or cost? Is it functionality or convenience? Like every decision in life there are the pros and the cons, let’s take a closer look at this trend.

Gas powered stoves offer an easily adjustable flame and an even heat source. You can utilize the flame in particular cooking methods and natural gas is less expensive. The downside is that unless a gas line is already installed in the kitchen, installing gas may be cost prohibitvie. Additionally, a gas oven and stove is generally more expensive to purchase. There is greater danger with potential gas leakage as well as flames catching objects on fire.

Electric ovens and stove tops are very easy to install and are generally inexpensive. Their surface is easy to clean (especially the flat ceramic top models) and can offer a more even heat distribution in the oven. The downside is that the cook surface may not allow for minor adjustments for cooking and electricity is more expensive than natural gas. In a power outage your electric range won’t work but your gas powered range will.

Despite all the pros and cons it appears that the home chef will want what the home chef wants. Take a look at these kitchens for some fresh ideas for your home.
